Fortune Brands Inc. has completed its acquisition of liquor brands from U.K. firm Allied Domecq through a joint deal with French spirits giant Pernod Ricard, the firms said last week. The deal makes Fortune the fourth-largest spirits company in the world, the company said. It was the seventh largest prior to the transaction.

Under the transaction, Fortune acquires more than 20 spirits and wine brands from Pernod, which completed its acquisition of Allied Domecq last week for $12.8 billion. Illinois-based Fortune, which sells Jim Beam and Knob Creek bourbons, acquires Canadian Club whiskey, Sauza tequila, and Courvoisier cognac, among other brands. The agreement also includes the acquisition of the Maker's Mark bourbon brand from Pernod. Fortune is paying $5 billion for the brands and related production facilities. Pernod is now the world's second-largest sprits group. It brands include Chivas Regal scotch and Bushmills Irish whiskey. Market leader Diageo is still number one by a wide margin. Diageo's brands include Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Tanqueray and Cuervo.
