Food & Drink Weekly, July 29, 2002

Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman July 23 named Garry L. McKee, director of the Wyoming Department of Health, to run USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Mckee takes up the position at a time when the agency is under fire from many quarters over its implementation of a science-based system of food inspections.

McKee replaces Thomas Billy, who left FSIS last October to head the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Since 1999, McKee has served as the director and cabinet secretary of the Wyoming Department of Health. His spent 18 years as chief of the Oklahoma State Department of Health's public health laboratory and two years as its director of sanitary bacteriology. Since 1992, he has been a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service Reserve.
