Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman ® is hailing results of a trade mission to Cuba that is expected to result in sales of $17 million in Nebraska ag products to the island country

Food & Drink Weekly, August 22, 2005

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) is hailing results of a trade mission to Cuba that is expected to result in sales of $17 million in Nebraska ag products to the island country. Heineman announced that Cuba signed a memorandum of understanding with a Nebraska trade delegation to purchase $17 million of Nebraska agricultural goods within the next 18 months including corn, wheat, soybeans, pork, beef, livestock feed and other agricultural products.

The trip was criticized by some U.S. lawmakers from Florida who urged Heineman to push the issue of human rights and they had called on him to meet with Cuban opposition leaders. The Nebraska trade group included producers of dry beans, corn and wheat, a University of Nebraska representative and a banker.
