Farm Credit Canada reports that as part of a major reorganization, Maple Leaf Foods has decided not to proceed with the construction of a new primary pork processing facility in Saskatoon, Sask. In addition, the company plans to wind down operations at its existing Saskatoon plant within the next three years.

Maple Leaf Foods previously announced plans to construct a C$110-million plant to replace its existing facility in Saskatoon. Maple Leaf acquired the existing plant, Mitchell's Gourmet Foods, when it bought Schneider Foods several years ago. However, bid proposals received on the new plant this spring far exceeded the capital costs the company had estimated. Maple Leaf says the specifications could not be changed to the extent required to meet its financial requirements.
