Researchers find fad diets generally ineffectual

Food & Drink Weekly, Nov 15, 2004

Reuters reports that dieters looking for tricks to lose weight got more bad news with the publication of a study showing diets that restrict certain food groups do not take off any extra weight. "Despite all the controversy about diet ... a calorie is a calorie is a calorie," Tufts University researcher Dr. Ernst Schaefer told Reuters.

A second study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows that people who added whole grains, such as whole oats and whole-wheat bread, to their diets lost more weight. Researchers said the added fiber in the diet may fill people up faster than processed grains.
