Battling the elements

Baseball Digest, July, 2005 by Tom Gage

FORMER TIGERS MANAGER SPARKY ANDERSON ONCE CONVINCED TWO OF HIS IMPRESsionable young players, Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker, that newspaper made good insulation in cold weather, Accordingly they tried it, putting a section of a newspaper inside their uniform on a cold day in New York.

"That lasted one inning," Trammell said. "We both thought Sparky was kidding us, but we tried it. It was pretty uncomfortable."--Tom Gage, The Detroit News
