Baseball Digest, July, 2002
These cards came from the estate of an elderly gentleman. He had meticulously stored them away. Most are from the 1980's, however they range from the 1970's through the early 1990's.
First priority is to enjoy what you collect. Still, most collectors prefer items that have potential for increase. A player's card increases as he achieves more. For example, Mark McGwire's early cards held steady for years. However, his 70-homerun season and reaching 500 career homeruns caused those cards to jump about 800% in just a couple of years. Barry Bonds accomplishments in the 2001 season also made his cards jump dramatically.
Some stars have amazing investment potential. Palmeiro, Ken Griffey, and Canseco are around 500 homeruns, virtually guaranteeing Hall of Fame enrollment. Larry Walker may be a career .320 hitter with 3000 hits. Tom Glavine may win 300 games. Rickey Henderson is the all-time runs leader. These are accomplishments that lead to enshrinement in Cooperstown.
Since these cards are not searched, we have no idea whether you will receive a certain player or not. However, in going through a few boxes, we found such stars as Ken Griffey, Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Roberto Alomar, Frank Thomas, Rickey Henderson, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire. These cards are mostly from the 1980's, so many stars, such as Brett, Puckett, Winfield, Ryan, Young, Fisk, Rose, Ryan, Schmidt, and Sandberg are included.
These cards have an incredible opportunity to skyrocket. These players include Manny Ramierz, Derek Jeter, Jeff Bagwell, Pedro Martinez, Madano Rivera, Shawn Green, Jim Thorne, Chipper Jones, Larry Walker, Sammy Sosa, Jason Giambi, Mike Hampton, Juan Gonzalez, Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriquez, Mo Vaughn, David Justice, Randy Johnson, and Mike Piazza. Some of these cards already carry a high demand. What happens as these players accomplish even more in their careers?
Interestingly, common player cards from the 1950's-1970's command $3-$5 to well over $100 each. This same future will probably hold true for today's common cards. All the cards this elderly gentleman saved have been stored carefully and meticulously.
