Motormouth, Part 2 - The Fans Speak Out - Letter to the Editor

Basketball Digest, March, 2003 by Watson Delaney

As I watched the television show "Outside the Lines" recently, there was a four-way conversation between Bob Ley (the host), Dick Vitale, Sonny Vaccaro, and Billy Packer. I did not catch the whole show, but I have been following the Packer-bashing of Vitale for working the LeBron James high school basketball game on ESPN2.

First of all, who does Packer think he is telling Vitale where he can and cannot do his job? Did he broadcast from Iraq or something? Packer thinks that they shouldn't allow players straight from high school into the NBA. Does he protest when baseball or tennis players become pros right after high school? Of course he doesn't; he singles out certain types of players.

Wasn't this the same Packer who said 20 or so years ago that there were too many foreign college basketball players in the U.S.? This guy needs to mend eye holes in his white sheets, put them back on the bed, and advise Trent Lott that this is 2002, not 1948.
