Bowling Digest, June, 2000 by L.R.
THE 36TH ANNUAL AMF Bowling World Cup, to be held October 15-21 in Lisbon, Portugal, will feature an arena setting for its men's and women's stepladder finals.
While qualifying and match-play rounds will be conducted at the new 30-lane Bowling Internacional de Lisboa in Nation's Park, site of the 1998 World Expo, the stepladder finals will move across the boulevard into the Sala Tejo arena at the Atlantic Pavilion. This will be the first indoor arena finals for the World Cup since 1992 in Le Mans, France. The 1997 World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, was decided in an outdoor arena setting at the foot of the Great Pyramids of Giza.
Bowlers from 79 nations competed in the 1999 tournament at Sam's Town in Las Vegas, which was won by Ahmed Shaheen of Qatar and Amanda Bradley of Australia. This year the reigning U.S. national amateur champions--Bill Hoffman of Columbus, Ohio, and Diandra Hyman of Dyer, Ind.--will try to bring the World Cup trophies back to the United States. Bowling fans interested in making the trip to Lisbon and qualifying for special hotel rates should contact tournament organizer Anne-Marie Board in England at 44-1-442-286-530 (fax) or via e-mail at A board@amf.com.
