The age of parity: a mix of rising stars and determined veterans makes this year's short-season sprint as compelling as any in years - 2003 PWBA Preview - Professional Women's Bowling Association

Bowling Digest, June, 2003 by Rick Woelfel

Tammy Turner (R)
Age: 32
Years on tour:. 10
Career titles: 4

After struggling in 2001, Turner rebounded last year to wind up 13th in the rankings. Her best finish came in her only TV appearance, at the Miller High Life National Players Championship, where she placed fifth. However, she made every cut. Hampered by chronic back problems, Turner hasn't won since 1996.

WHAT THE PROS SAY: "She is such a talent. Carolyn [Dorin-Ballard] may be more driven than her, and even then I'm not sure. Everybody has a certain level of desire, and hers is way up there. She really wants to be at the top of bowling, and she was well on her way before she had back surgery. Unfortunately, her back just can't take it.

"She was definitely the one. Look at when she first came out on tour [four rifles in three seasons]. She's never been the same. You can see that she's in pain, and you just can't bowl in pain."

Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (R)
Age: 36
Years on tour: 11
Career titles: 1

Dorin-Lizzi had a steady 2002, cashing in all 19 starts while making two TV appearances. She finished fourth (with Shannon Sellers) at the Collegiate/Pro Doubles Challenge and again at the Lady Ebonite Classic. While Dorin-Lizzi has battled wrist problems at times during her career, the fact that she has won just once in 10 pro seasons surprises some players.

WHAT THE PROS SAY: "She does kind of live underneath the shadow of her sister [Carolyn Dorin-Ballard]. Cathy seems to be put on the back burner when it comes to her bowling career. She could be a lot more successful than she has been."
