Getting technical again

Bowling Digest, Fall, 2004 by Shaina Schwartz

I have some arguments in response to the fan letter, "Getting Technical," by Kenneth Lee from Raytown, Mo., in your Summer 2004 issue.

His letter spoke of modern technology and its effect on bowling today. He commented that he would like to see the PBA restrict bowlers to one ball that they have to use throughout the series. Now, I am only 14 years old, but it is plain to see that his suggestion is completely ludicrous.

If a bowler was to use a ball that was made for heavy oil, but closer to the end of the series the lanes break down, what is he to do? An obvious answer for a right-handed bowler would be to step left and swing the ball. However, say the ball didn't hit the pocket because the core/cover stock combination isn't designed for that shot. Hello, 9-pin!

Technology in many sports is changing to make the game easier. Imagine suggesting to a PGA member that he is only allowed to use one club for all 18 holes. An iron club would not be sufficient for a putt, just as one ball would not be sufficient for a series in bowling.
