Bowled Over by the Bowl-Expo - Brief Article

Bowling Digest, Oct, 2001 by Dick Evans

A FEW WRITERS COVERing the ABC Masters in Reno jumped a plane the day after the tournament to cover the Bowl-Expo and the Bowling Proprietors Association of America convention in Las Vegas. Once there, we were able to unearth some interesting news.

First of all, be happy that China landed the Olympic Games in 2008 if you want bowling to be an Olympic event. All signs point to the Chinese leaders being bowling-friendly.

Want to stumble on a pot of gold next year? If so, pack up your ball and head to Dubai to earn a berth in the $1 million strike-it-rich Dubai World Challenge in the United Arab Emirates April 2-7. And if you want to earn a berth in the U.S. Open, try to qualify for the tournament, which starts December 1 in Fountain Valley, Calif.

Anyone struggling to get high school bowling recognized as a varsity sport in his or her state should contact Tennessee's Ronnie Carter, the president-elect of the National Federation of State High School Associations, by calling (330) 518-4726. He knows what to say and the obstacles that have to be overcome, and he is more than happy to help further the cause of high school bowling.

If you qualify for senior play and want to bowl in two back-to-back tournaments, make plans to be in Reno for the FIQ International Senior Open next February 3-11 and the $1 million Stadium Classic next February 11-April 28. And because you'll be competing on the notorious lanes of the National Bowling Stadium, it would be smart to practice bowling with your left hand.
