Pete and repeat - The Fans Speak Out

Bowling Digest, Oct, 2003

I'm really sorry that fans such as Mary L. Samms ["The Fans Speak Out," August 2003] don't seem to understand being under pressure on the job. Pete Weber is a pro bowler. That is his job, and one that he does very well. If you think Weber is obnoxious, perhaps you've never had your paycheck decided by a 10-pin you couldn't carry.

I watch every PBA broadcast, and I have not seen Weber do anything that was rude or in any way reflected negatively on the pro tour. He is simply the Paul O'Neill of bowling. I only wish today's young people had the work ethic of our great pro bowlers--Mr. Pete Weber included. Even as a fan of men who display impeccable sportsmanship, such as Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Jeff Lizzi, I love to watch Pete bowl.

I'm really tired of hearing all of the complaints about Pete Weber's antics. Weber has almost single-handedly made televised PBA events popular again. People should back off and give him some credit. Some viewers are so involved with the way he acts that they forget to notice that he is one of the best bowlers in the PBA. If you don't like him, don't watch him. If the way he acts helped him get on television--if it improved his game--let him be who he is and cut him some slack.

By the way, thank you for your wonderful magazine. I only wish you published more than six issues per year!
