Bowling Digest, Feb, 2002
"I got you now, Dad, I got you now," is all Pete Weber could say after he won the PBA Great Lakes Classic at Spectrum Lanes.
Weber defeated Parker Bohn III in the championship match, 235-201, to earn his 26th career title--which tied him for sixth all-time with his legendary father, Dick Weber, as well as with PBA Hall-of-Famer Don Johnson. "My father wanted me to get it as much as I did," said Weber, who earned $40,000 for the effort. "Now Pete Weber and Dick Weber can be mentioned in the same category."
The younger Weber then set his sights on completely stepping out of Dad's shadow--which the 39-year-old managed to do on Thanksgiving weekend thanks to a victory at the Greater Louisville Open. The senior Weber was 47 when he won his final PBA Tour title. "Passing him has always been a goal, but I'll deal with the milestone when I get to it," Pete Weber said after the Great Lakes Classic. "For now, I'll just enjoy this [title]."
In the semifinal, Weber nearly rolled the 15th televised 300 game in PBA history, but he left a 4-pin on his final shot. "I was repeating to myself, `Don't throw it slow, don't throw it slow,' and that's just what I did. But just a pinch."
Weber powered past three-time PBA champion Steve Wilson, 299-242, to earn his chance to make family history. Weber threw 17 strikes in 24 frames throughout the two games, including five consecutive to start the championship.
