Where's Brady? Right here! - The Fans Speak Out

Football Digest, August, 2002 by Joe Dennis

It is absolutely ludicrous that you had Kurt Warner on the cover of your April 2002 issue. Whether you want to accept it or not, the fact is that Tom Brady was the most valuable player of the Super Bowl and should have been on the cover. This kid outplayed your vaunted Kurt Warner and the Rams in Super Bowl 36.

Where do you guys get off saying Kurt Warner is your top player for 2001? Obviously, you should be writing about something other than football. Tom Brady led his team to victory week in and week out in 2001. Not only does Tom Brady deserve to be on the cover of your magazine, but he and the Patriots deserved more than the one-and-a-half-page write-up they got in "Kickoff." It's sad to see how ignorant you guys really are.

You're absolutely right--Tom Brady did deserve to be on the cover of FOOTBALL DIGEST. That's why, as you'll see from the accompanying photograph, we put him on the cover of the March 2002 issue. That March issue came out just as the playoffs were starting, before Brady became a national phenomenon. We, then, were ahead of the curve in recognizing Brady as one of the league's brightest young stars--so maybe we know something about football after all. As for Warner being on the cover the next month (the April issue to which you referred), that was our annual awards issue. Perhaps you noted that those awards were based strictly on regular-season achievements--not the playoffs or Super Bowl--and most people will agree that Warner had a Player of the Year-caliber regular season.
