Bowled over - The Fans Speak Out - Letter to the Editor

Soccer Digest, May, 2002 by Morgan North

I was glad to see that you included the NASL's 1977 Soccer Bowl in your list of the 25 most memorable matches of the past quarter-century. Being a huge Pele fan as a kid, I vividly remember attending the semifinal game along with some 73,000 other fans as we packed Giants Stadium to watch the Cosmos defeat the Rochester Lancers to move on to the championship. While it's true that the Soccer Bowl was Pele's final competitive match, it was still a thrill to watch him later play for and against his former Brazilian club, Santos, before another capacity crowd in the Meadowlands. I often think back to those heady days when me and 18,000 other faithful fans make the trek across the river to see another uninspired effort by our injury-plagued MetroStars.
