21. Called-back goals and chaos France vs. Kuwait, first round, 1982

Confusion reigned in the 75th minute of this first-round affair after France's Alain Giresse thought he had scored his team's fourth goal in what eventually ended in a 4-1 rout. The Kuwaiti defenders, who did not move, claimed they Football Association president Prince Fahid stormed on to the field and protested the call. Kuwait was ready to leave the field when Soviet referee Miroslav Stupar reversed his decision, stunning the French. Fahid eventually was fined $12,000, pocket change for one of the world's richest men.

22. The foul Brazil vs. Argentina, second round, 1982

Italy's Claudio Gentile had covered Diego Maradona closely and kicked him just about everywhere he could in a 2-1 second-round group win. 24. Fast, faster, fastest England vs. France, first round, 1982

England's Bryan Robson scored the fastest goal in World Cup history in a 3-1 triumph over France. It took him all of 27 seconds in a match that was played in temperatures of more than 100 degrees. A throw-in started the sequence before Robson volleyed home a Paul Mariner cross. The French, however, had the last laugh, reaching the semifinals. The English could not get out of their second-round group.
