Cruise Travel, July-August, 2002
Norwegian Coastal Voyage is introducing "Antarctica & The Chilean Fjords," a soft-adventure expedition cruise on the MS Nordnorge, which has eight summer-season (Southern Hemisphere) departures scheduled from November 6, 2002, to February 12, 2003. The unusual routing pairs the spectacular beauty of Antarctica, and its glaciers, icebergs, whales, and penguins, with the fjords, snowcapped mountains, waterfalls, and lakes along Chile's coast. The NCV staff has dubbed the cruise at the bottom of the world "Norway Upside Down" because of the scenery's similarity to the Norwegian coast.
The centerpiece of the 19-day, air-inclusive itinerary is a 15-day cruise between Ushuaia, Argentina, the world's southern-most city, and Puerto Montt, Chile, gateway to the lake district, via Cape Horn, the Drake Passage, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Built in 1997 and rated Ice Class C, the 464-berth Nordnorge carries a maximum of 350 passengers on NCV Expedition Cruises that feature naturalist guides, lectures, and Zodiac boat landings. The cruise fares of $5,115 to $7,290 include roundtrip Lan Chile flights from New York to Santiago and Buenos Aires, first-class hotels and breakfasts daily in both cities, flights between Santiago and Puerto Montt and between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, all meals during the cruise, the cabin categories selected, port charges, and transfers. Accommodations are in large outside cabins, junior suites, and suites.
