Farmer's almanac

Cruise Travel, Sept-Oct, 2005 by Karen Farmer

In reference to the "Alaska Port Guide" in the June 2005 Cruise Travel: Although you consider the article's author, M. T. Schwartzman an Alaska "expert," I completely disagree with his "I say forget it" on considering flightseeing independent touring. He references that the cruise lines book up the tours in advance.

However, there are many independents that are not ship-contracted and superior to ship tours. Especially flights, there are many long-standing superior operators that give excellent tours, in small groups with some savings. Some ship-contracted flights are almost shuttle-like due to tight scheduling and moving the greatest number of people. I speculate he has never booked flights independently?

In the article's list of "Pros & Cons" to booking independent tours, the author lists "limited space availability" as a "con" but fails to stress the importance of booking ahead, which is easy to do in Alaska. It is important, however, that you have plans and reservations in place before you leave home. Alaska is exploding with tourists.

Booking in advance is one option for independent touring in Alaska. However, in preparing this article we consulted with various sources, including the Juneau Convention & Visitors Bureau and the White Pass & Yukon Route scenic railway. It was their advice that space availability is one of the pitfalls of booking on your own.
