Cruise Travel, Jan-Feb, 2002 by Kenneth DePriest, Brenda DePriest
Letters in the December 2001 Cruise Travel regarding the Captain's Table story in the October issue prompt me to share our story. In November 1992, we sailed out of Malaga, Spain, on the Cunard Princess for a 10-day cruise to the Canary Islands. The passengers were predominantly British and German.
The first full day out, we had returned to the ship from a shore excursion in Tangier to have open-seating lunch in the dining room. During this time, we were approached by the maitre d' who asked if we would like to change our table for the evening. When we ask if he meant just for that evening, he responded that he meant for the entire cruise because he was inviting us to be seated at the Captain's Table. We were absolutely delighted and accepted.
That evening we joined two very interesting and enjoyable British couples at the table for seven. The captain was QE2 Master Ron Warwick, whom we found to be extremely charming. He was our host at the table at every dinner including Thanksgiving. We were also invited to the Captain's Quarters for a cocktail party. After 15 cruises, this one will always remain special to us because of this special experience.
