Concerned for black coral - Letters

Cruise Travel, Jan-Feb, 2003 by Krista Kasper

As a frequent traveler to Mexico, I was somewhat concerned about the black coral jewelry spoken of as "favorite souvenirs" in the "Tropical Twists" article in the October 2002 Cruise Travel. Black coral is very beautiful, but it is an endangered species. It is also illegal to own if obtained from a vendor without a yearly government permit.

If visitors to Cozumel still wish to purchase black coral jewelry, they should do so from a reputable dealer with a government issued permit and be sure to obtain a certificate of authenticity. For legal sellers of black coral, it is normal practice to provide one. It is also a safeguard for you to know that it is genuine and legal.
