Single surcharge suggestion - Letters - Letter to the Editor

Cruise Travel, March-April, 2002 by J. Ellsworth Andrews

Why is there a single surcharge of 150 to 230 percent when ships are running with empty cabins? I have cruised about 800 days over the last 42 years. I have been widowed twice and am now single. I still enjoy cruising but will not pay the 200 percent surcharge.

Suggestion: Accept normal deposit from single cruiser. If a cabin is available 45 days before sailing, the single must take it at the per person rate (no surcharge). If the cruiser refuses, he or she loses the deposit. If no cabins are available, then the cruise line returns the deposit, less $50 or so for paperwork.

Hopefully this would result in fewer empty cabins and also less expense. It's better than empty cabins!
