New Princess enrichments - Cruise News - ScholarShip@ Sea program - Brief Article

Cruise Travel, March-April, 2003

With the debut of Princess Cruises' Coral Princess came a brand-new "ScholarShip@ Sea" program taking onboard learning to a new level in the ship's state-of-the-art, multipurpose Universe Lounge. This innovative educational program offers a variety of enrichment courses designed to take full advantage of the technical wonders of a spectacular new two-deck venue that incorporates the latest in lighting and digital surround sound and video capabilities.

Three revolving stages with integrated lifts, giant projection screens, and the flexibility to broadcast a cooking demonstration to an audience of more than 400--or accommodate up to 50 passengers with laptops for a hands-on web-page design seminar---distinguish Princess Cruises' ScholarShip@ Sea program as a new standard in sea-going education.

Guest lecturers and shipboard experts offer Coral Princess passengers the opportunity to learn new skills or update their knowledge on a variety of topics, including cooking, visual arts, computer skills, finance, and, a first in the industry, pottery. A number of special features were built into the new ship to facilitate these courses, including a full demonstration kitchen set and the industry's first onboard pottery studio and kilns.

Passengers can choose from approximately 20 courses per voyage (six per sea day) from four core subject areas--culinary arts, visual/creative arts, photography, and computer technology. Italian cooking, hand-built pottery, digital travel photography, web-page design, estate planning, and watercolor techniques are just a few of the enrichment courses planned for the Universe Lounge. All courses are free of charge and passengers are welcome to enjoy as many as they wish.
