Warm memories of chilly Cruise days

Cruise Travel, March-April, 2005 by Gloria Moser

I had to reply to the letter "Won't Weather Winter NY Departures" in the December 2004 issue of Cruise Travel complaining about the two days of cold-weather sailing when you embark the port of New York for the tropics in winter. My first cruise was in January of 1961, on Holland America Line's OLD Nieuw Amsterdam, which left from New Jersey. We reached there from Akron, Ohio, on the Erie Lakawanna Railroad. Escaping the icy January weather on land, for a wonderful climate-controlled ship, was awesome. We enjoyed the music, lectures, shows, and beautifully served meals within the comfort of our ship. In addition, there were the fantastic views of the sea as we moved along.

By taking half a Triptone (over-the-counter pill) morning and at night, my squeamish stomach stays serene and peaceful in any stormy seas. It would be a complete shame to consider those fun days at sea in the northern climate as wasted. On the return voyage, it gives you an opportunity to make the transition, from all the activity of the ports and sightseeing, to calming down again for the work-week ahead. Another lovely time, indoors, at sea.
