Travel America, Sept-Oct, 2003
One of northern Florida's historic "dogtrot" cottages has been restored and is available for weekly and monthly rentals. Built in 1895 and originally owned by Pittsburgh millionaire Thomas Mellon, The Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in St. John's County outside the city of St. Augustine. It sits 100 feet from the ocean on one of northern Florida's last unspoiled inlets. Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach, and porpoise and whale sightings are not uncommon. The five-bedroom cottage has a wraparound porch and a breezeway running down the center, its sloping roof and detached kitchen were designed to take advantage of the ocean breeze. Weekly rates start at $2,000. One-night stays are possible at certain times.
