Travel America, Nov-Dec, 2001
The historic Bear Mountain Lodge, located three miles north of Silver City, New Mexico, and adjacent to the Gila National Forest, recently re-opened its doors after an extensive renovation. Owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy of New Mexico, the 1920s hacienda offers guests the opportunity to experience nature while enjoying the comforts of a stylish bed & breakfast. Guests enjoy guided tours and workshops focusing on art, ecology, archaeology, and more. Conservation even extends to the furniture, which was locally crafted from small-diameter trees that were cut in order to thin and restore the health of the national forest. The main lodge has a dining room, library, and great room with hand-hewn beams and two stone fireplaces. Rates ($85 to $175) include breakfast.
