Exploring San Diego North: beautiful weather, world-class sights, and 36 miles of coastline make this string of Southern California communities a popular year-round destination for all ages

Travel America, Jan-Feb, 2003 by Pat Woods

Down the road from the Animal Park, Orfila Vineyards offers daily tasting of its award-winning wines.

During a 2 p.m. guided tour, wine-maker Leon Santoro said the 600-foot elevation and cool breezes create an ideal climate to produce grapes for top-quality red wines costing less than those from Napa Valley. While browsing the trendy tasting room, we purchased deli food for an impromptu picnic under grape arbors. The view overlooking the vineyards and San Pasqual Valley creates an indescribable sense of tranquility.

A few miles away, the 150 Grand Cafe is the fine-dining place of choice in downtown Escondido. The modern American menu features an abundance of fresh, local ingredients, and finds its roots all over the cooking map. Those in the know recommend the pecan-crusted pork tenderloin with cornbread salad, smothered Swiss chard, roasted Fuji apples, and sherry-apple jus. My cheesecake came with huge, flavorful berries.

Our short visit to San Diego North ended too soon. We'll return next year, perhaps as part of a three-generation group. With so much to discover and enjoy, we'll stay for a week.

For Carlsbad information, call (800) 227-5722 or visit www.visitcarlsbad.com. For nearby San Diego North communities, call (800) 848-3336 or visit www.sand iegonorth.com. Summer is high season; winter visitors may find shorter lines, less traffic, and lower prices.
