Nebraska: Vestiges of the Old West and a wide array of recreational areas lure history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts to the Cornhusker State - State Of The Month

Travel America, March-April, 2004 by Dave G. Houser

One of the state's major entertainment and recreation complexes is to be found along the short stretch of I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln. Take exit 426 to explore the Strategic Air & Space Museum, which covers 300,000 square feet and displays more than 30 of the world's most famous aircraft and missiles including the awesome Lockheed SR-71.

Just south of the exit, the Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari is home to a host of native animals--bison, elk, antelope, wolves, and cranes--that can be viewed up close and personal. At the same exit, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park covers 700 acres of wooded hillsides overlooking the Platte River, providing a top spot for camping and year-round outdoor fun just minutes from either city.
