Chicago in Style
The 417-room Wyndham Chicago, just a block off North Michigan Avenue's "Magnificent Mile," is a high-rise haven for visitors who come to shop the city's toniest retail district. A gleaming glass edifice originally built as an office tower, the upscale hotel (opened in 1999) boasts spacious guest rooms with nine-foot-high ceilings and such amenities as a coffeemaker, hair dryer, ironing board, three telephones, and Egyptian cotton bathrobes. Public facilities include a fitness center with an indoor pool. The hotel's Caliterra restaurant offers a lively blend of "Cal-Ital" entrees influenced by the cuisine of Northern California and Tuscany, Italy. Suite Life
Nearly three out of four Americans believe that having enough personal space is important, according to a "Space Survey" recently commissioned by Embassy Suites Hotels. For example, more than half of the frequent travelers surveyed felt that too many hotel rooms today are "the size of a shoebox," and nearly half of the respondents said they become claustrophobic in small places.
Embassy Suites is the largest all-suite, upscale hotel chain in the United States. It offers two-room suites with separate living room, private bedroom, and mini kitchen. Call (800) EMBASSY or visit www.embassysuites.com.
New in Alaska
Princess Cruises and Tours has announced plans to build a $10-million lodge next to Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge will have approximately 100 rooms. In keeping with its dramatic location--with spectacular views of Mt. Wrangell, Mt. Drum, and Mt. Blackburn--the lodge will combine architectural elements of historic national park lodges with those of old Alaskan mining buildings. Public areas will include a restaurant, lounge, and mountain viewing room. The lodge is scheduled to open for the 2002 summer season.
