Non-traditional players gain share

Telecom Asia, April, 2007

New forms of communication being offered among online communities by players such as Skype and Google are posing a major threat to core communications revenues. According to Analysys, usage associated with these services will increasingly take the place of traditional communications services in the coming years. Skype and similar services can possibly chip away as much as $18.2 billion in revenues from the traditional telephony market by 2011, representing 5.4% of the global market by then. Online retailers are also expected to enjoy an $820-million market for on-demand video content aggregation and corner more than 60% of the $4.3-billion digital music aggregation market in four years.
