Low-cost GigE switch for small business

Telecom Asia, Sept, 2004 by Fiona Chau

Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, has introduced a new, rack-mountable switch aimed at smaller, budget-conscious businesses.

The switch comprises two embedded gigabit, 24 10/100 ports, and a mini GBIC slot with WebView (SRW224).

Other features include VLAN, port trucking and the ability to monitor and configure the switch using a Web browser.

The switch also features auto speed negotiation and auto MDI/MDI-X, which allows the switch to automatically sense and configure the cable type (cross-over or straight-through) connected to each port.

Additionally, the new WebView monitoring tool allows administrators to control their network remotely through a Web browser for simple configuration and monitoring. A console port is available for users who prefer to manage their network directly from a PC.

With the SRW224, small businesses can build a network that will fit their network current needs and have the option to scale up as their network grows, Linksys says.
