Calcium for the rest of us - Goodnews: essential natural health news - Brief Article

Better Nutrition, March, 2004

If you're cutting down on saturated fat products, how can you ensure you get sufficient calcium?

Getting enough calcium is an important issue. But attempts to reduce fat consumption by limiting dairy foods can threaten your calcium intake.

Don't forget that you can still get required calcium while avoiding excess fat by switching to lower fat alternatives such as skim milk; lower-fat cheeses such as edam, cottage cheese and mozzarella; reduced-fat hard cheeses; and yogurt instead of cream in cooking.

If your dairy intake is low, you may want to consider calcium/magnesium supplements--the magnesium aids in calcium absorption.
