Gluten-free: celiac disease could be the cause of your gastrointestinal problems

Better Nutrition, April, 2004 by Cindy Kaplan

I've now been on a gluten-free diet for more than a year, and I feel as good as new. The only thing that separates me from most of my 30-something girlfriends is a continued battle with infedility. Though women with undiagnosed celiac disease account for one in 16 cases of unexplained in fertility, this problem usually resolves itself after 6-12 months without gluten. Since I continue to struggle with infertility long after the rest of my body has healed, it is unclear whether the two are related. Regardless, I move into this challenge with a newfound confidence in my ability to manage my health. I know now that the answers lie within me.

If I am blessed with a child, it's likely--a 1 in 22 chance--that he or she will inherit my disease. One thing is certain: That child will never lack for love or good food.
