I just wanted to thank you - Letter to the Editor

Better Nutrition, August, 2003 by Murray Wesley

I just wanted to thank you for your story on bathtub salmon ("Farmed & Dangerous," June 2003, p. 54). The practice is shocking, and your article is very educational. Many thanks to Michael Downey for his well-developed work.

How can such unnatural fishing methods be used routinely--with no suggestions on the label that these are anything but traditionally netted fish? Isn't that fraud?

Interesting that you should mention the idea of fraud. In April 2003, the Seattle law firm of Smith & Lowney filed a class-action suit against grocery chains Safeway, Albertsons and Kroger, alleging that they illegally concealed the artificial coloring in their farm-raised salmon by not listing it on their labels. Since then, the stores have changed their labels, but the lawsuit continues. Visit www.smithandlowney.com/salmon for more information.
