Better Nutrition, Sept, 2007 by Nicole Brechka
"What can you do to make your life sweeter?" My friend wasn't talking about sweet in the double-chocolate-fudge or gooey-sticky-bun sense of the word (although, that probably would do the trick). We had been discussing what truly lights our fires when she posed this question. My initial thoughts were centered around carving out more time for life's simple pleasures--playing with my cats, reading a good book, traveling to a new place, and spending more time with family and friends. But the more I let the question dance around in my thoughts, the more I realized how applicable it was to living a healthier lifestyle, particularly as it relates to an article in this issue, "True Spirit of Organics" on p. 50.
The feature, written by Lisa Turner, has a simple, yet inspiring message that underscores the true essence of organic living. For example, buying organic food is about more than just a label. With the burgeoning organic marketplace, it is now equally necessary to consider philosophies of food production, such as small, family farms and the ethical treatment of animals and workers.
I put this ideology to the test recently while shopping. As I reached for my favorite brand of half-and-half, I noticed a carton of organic half-and-half from a local dairy farm tucked in the back of the shelf. It displayed a seal certifying that the cows had been humanely treated. I almost always buy the same brand of dairy foods, but after reading Turner's story, I reevaluated my options and chose the locally manufactured product. Now when I sip my morning coffee, I feel good about supporting a company that shares my ideals--and I'm doing something good for my body by reducing my exposure to pesticides, hormones and other chemicals.
This may seem like a small example, but it reinforces the belief that staying true to yourself and treating yourself well are significant components to living a fuller, sweeter life.
