May Department Stores cuts work force - Market Watch - Brief Article

ST. LOUIS -- May Department Stores announced that it has laid off about 1,500 workers in sales management and support positions, a total of approximately 1.3% of its total workforce. The company said last month that its first quarter earnings rose $2 million, contrasting against a 7.2% drop-off in sales. May reported that 1Q sales fell to $2.87 billion, from $3.10 billion a year ago.
