Fleming buys Furr's chain - of supermarkets - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, July 23, 2001

DALLAS -- Fleming has acquired bankrupt Furr's Supermarkets, including 66 stores in New Mexico and Texas. The company plans to convert at least 10 of the stores to its price-impact retail format, while the remainder may be sold to supermarket chains or independents that would be supplied by Fleming.

Since Fleming became the sole supplier to Kmart stores nationwide, the food supplier has begun building a customer base in new markets with the Furr's deal being the newest chapter in this strategy.
