Wal-Mart tests 'dollar store' concept - Market Watch - merchandising effort - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, August 12, 2002

BENTONVILLE, ARK. -- Discount retailer Wal-Mart is testing the waters of an in-store "dollar store," according to a Dow Jones report. The company reportedly has "a number" of stores that have such sections, including stores in Laredo, Texas, and Baltimore. The in-store "dollar store" is just one of several store-within-a-store merchandising efforts, such as appliance stores, package-handling and candy stores.

If Wal-Mart shoppers like the "dollar store' concept, it could spread to other locations, a Wal-Mart spokesman told Dow Jones.
