LOS ANGELES -- Adding another log to the video game fire, Microsoft Corp. has announced it will launch X-Box Live, an online gaming service for its video game console Nov. 15, 2002, the one-year anniversary of its X-Box game console. The service will require a $49.95 starter kit that includes 12 months of access, a game and a headset kit for voice communications with other players.

At least six online-enabled games will accompany the launch. X-Box Live features built-in networking capabilities, but only supports broadband Internet connections. Competitors Sony Corp. and Nintendo later this year also will offer online gaming for their consoles Playstation 2 and GameCube, respectively. According to surveys by the Interactive Digital Software Association, as many as 31% of game players say they play online.
