FRAMINGHAM, MASS. -- For the fiscal second quarter, Staples Inc. said it had higher sales and the first quarterly profit at its Staples.com Internet arm. The on-line businesses (which include Staples.com, StaplesLink.com, Quill.com and BusinessDepot.com) posted a 24% jump in revenues to $234 million for the second quarter, and Staples.com posted a net income of $5 million.

Total company profits fell 5.5%, in line with Wall Street expectations, with net income of $40.35 million, or $0.09 a share, for the quarter, down from $42.56 million, or $0.10 a share, in the year-ago period. Total company sales grew 5% to $2.31 billion from $2.20 billion a year ago. Same store sales were flat.
