DSN Retailing Today, Sept 23, 2002

WILKESBORO, N.C. -- Home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. plans to build a new $13.6 million flatbed center that will supply products to about 100 Lowe's retail stores throughout the central United States, and will initially employ more than 30 people. The 186,000-square-foot facility will be built on a 40-acre site located in Grand Ledge, Mich.

The facility will take about 10 months to complete. The flatbed center will receive rail and truck shipments of large, bulk products from suppliers. Products will then be loaded as customized orders on flatbed trucks destined for Lowe's stores in a six-state area. Lowe's currently operates 11 regional flatbed centers throughout the United States, with an additional facility underway in Texas.
