Walgreens adds RFID tracking systems

DSN Retailing Today, Jan 9, 2006

DEERFIELD, ILL. -- Walgreens will be adding RFID display tracking systems to more than 5,000 stores. After signing a multiyear agreement with Goliath Solutions, the two companies will work with 15 initial consumer packaged goods manufacturers to analyze in real time the sales impact of store displays.

The Goliath tracking system uses radio-frequency identification technology to electronically capture when, how long and approximately where displays are placed in stores. When combined with Walgreens point-of-sale information, the system will allow the drug store chain to design and implement displays that are proven to drive sales. The system also can be used to notify store managers of which displays to put up or take down.
