Office superstores scale back openings - Office Depot Inc., OfficeMax Inc - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, Oct 23, 2000

DELRAY BEACH, FLA. AND SHAKER HEIGHTS, OHIO -- Office Depot and OfficeMax will hit the low end of this year's previously stated store expansion plans. Office Depot had indicated early in its fiscal year that it would open 125 stores. This number was subsequently revised down to 100 and then to a range of 75 to 80 stores. The actual yearend number will be closer to 70 stores, according to the company.

OfficeMax initially said it planned 50 to 75 openings for the year, and it recently announced its openings for the year would total 55. Both companies have experienced operational and productivity problems at their stores.
