Rug displays at mass offer a variety of style and price - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, Nov 6, 2000 by Mike Duff

As is the case with off-pricers like Marshalls, shopping the selection of rolled rugs required a sense of adventure, but it offered a bit of differentiation as well. Rather than the olefin products available in Kohl's and in the discounters, Marshalls offered a number of wool rugs with signage that declared "Handmade in the People's Republic of China." Although the tag may repel as many shoppers as it draws, given the political consideration, the price was right. A 55-by-80-inch wool rug sold for $199.99.

Of course, many discounters may contend they don't compete at the price points common at Kohl's and Marshalls, but this is increasingly less true. The lower-end price points at Kohl's particularly are close enough to upper-end discount store price points to suggest that the consumers may cross shop before making a purchasing decision. At the Oceanside Kohl's, price points on room-sized rugs began at $149.99 and continued up to $349.99. Not too far away, in a College Point, N.Y., Target, top price points available in room-sized rugs was $129.99.
