School, Home & Office Products Association - Retailer News - back-to-school season retail sales trends - Brief Article

Discount stores and office superstores lost ground to drug stores and supermarkets during the 2002 back-to-school season, according to the fifth annual study of the key selling period conducted by the School, Home & Office Products Association. The survey of 500 consumers conducted between Sept. 3 and Sept.

12 found that the percentage of consumers indicating they bought most of their supplies at discount stores slipped to 66% this year from 71% last year and declined to 14% from 19% at office superstores. The percentage of those who said they bought most of their supplies at drug stores increased from 4% to 6%, while those who cited supermarkets increased from 1% to 3%.
