Louis Vuitton has sold thousands of $500 pet carriers, and Burberry and Coach have retailed countless coats, leashes and collars. Petote followed their lead, coming out with moderately priced carriers for retailers including Petco, and Old Navy has always carried pet products. Putting the trend in the paws of additional mainstream consumers, H&M is bowing its own line of dogwear next spring.

"Small dogs themselves have become very popular accessories, and by making dog styles affordable, we can attract a wide audience," said Catarina Midby, Sweden-based head of fashion press at H&M. The line will be sold only in urban markets across the United States and Europe, where small dogs are most popular. Fifties-inspired SKUs include a polka-dotted bag, cotton sweaters at $12 and raincoats at $15.
