CPU/TV mergers - What's Hot - TiVo Inc and SonicBlue Inc will launch home networking products - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, Jan 27, 2003

The idea of coupling computers with home entertainment centers has been around for years but several companies are finally ready to make "home networking" a reality.

TiVo Inc. will introduce its Home Media Option this spring for $99. The service will allow subscribers to connect computers to TiVo Series 2 digital video recorders and display files such as digital photos on television sets.

SonicBlue Inc. will launch a similar technology in April when its Go-Video D2730 hits stores at a suggested price of $249. The unit will combine a DVD player with a box that connects to a computer and allows users to download images and music files to TVs.

The two companies will be the first to market home networking, but they'll soon have competition. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month, both Sony and Microsoft announced their own streaming media technologies.
