Costco gives bath the warehouse treatment - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, March 10, 2003

Costco's bath presentation is something of an essay on warehouse club merchandising. The display is focused, big and gives warehouse club shoppers a bulky bargain on name brand merchandise.

An eight-pallet run of towels was positioned behind two related end caps at a store in Garden City, N.Y., last month. One end cap was devoted to beach towels and another held Ralph Lauren Polo three-piece towel sets. The Polo products were 100% cotton and the sets sold for $10.59. In the aisle, one pallet display the farthest from the end caps held eight-packs of kitchen towels from Cecil Saydah with a price tag of $11.99. The remaining pallet displays held Martex towels with 24-packs of 12-inch-by-12-inch commercial washcloths, priced at $9.99. After that came 12-packs of 16-inch-by-27-inch commercial hand towels for $12.99. Thereafter, towels sold individually for $5.99. Each display held one color of the 100% Egyptian cotton Martex towels in white, Ivory, Sky, Hydrangea and Ivy.
