Sales at the big three discounters may not be booming, but at least they are moving in the right direction. February same store sales at Wal-Mart rose 4.3%. Comps at the Target division of Target Corp. rose 2.9%, while corporate wide same store sales inched ahead to 1.5%. Camp sales at Mervyn's and Marshall Field's were down for the period.

At Kmart, sales rose 3.3% at its stores open for at least one year. Meanwhile, in the mid-tier, Kohl's overall sales were up in the stratosphere, increasing a dramatic 28.4%. More earthbound were their camps--a respectable 7.3%. JCPenney and Sears bath reported same store decreases during February, 2.1% and 2.0%, respectively.
