DSN Retailing Today, March 25, 2002

Hot Topics' recent earnings report put to bed rumors of a precipitous decline in February sales that had its share price tumbling. Hot Topic didn't have a great February, with same store sales down about 1.4% in February, but rumors spoke of a much greater decline. Comps for the quarter that ended March 4 rose 3.8%.

Sales in the period gained 26% to $23.1 million from $18.3 million in February 2001. Fears that February comps had slid by as much as 5% put pressure on share price, which fell from over $24 to just over $21 on the day results were announced.
